GBCA Launches Green Star Performance v2: A New Era for Sustainable Building Ratings
12-Aug-2024The Green Building Council Australia (GBCA) has introduced the second version of its Green Star Performance rating tool, updating the framework for sustainable building practices. First launched in 2013, this upgraded tool integrates the latest trends and investor demands into a single, user-friendly digital platform. It aligns with key frameworks such as CBI, GRESB, and TCFD, addressing 14 of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The tool aims to support improvements in the performance of existing buildings, many of which were constructed before the latest environmental standards were established. Green Star Performance v2 provides a structured approach to enhance the sustainability of these buildings by incorporating updated benchmarks and guidelines.
This tool embeds circular economy principles into building operations, addressing issues such as fit-out waste, embodied carbon, health and wellbeing, social impact, nature, and climate resilience. It’s designed to improve corporate reporting and disclosure, helping investors and banks make better-informed decisions. Facilities managers are given a “ladder to better,” simplifying the journey to improved sustainability.
A key feature is the harmonisation with NABERS ratings, allowing buildings to earn up to 27 points towards a Performance rating. This seamless integration facilitates ESG reporting, enabling sustainability teams to manage the deluge of ESG requirements more efficiently.
GBCA has refined the benchmarks for world leadership in sustainability, with clear definitions for each of the six stars and mandatory credits that guarantee reliable outcomes. This gives investors and lenders greater confidence in the sustainability credentials of rated buildings. Additionally, Green Star Performance v2 is versatile, easily applicable to all asset types, including social infrastructure.
The shift from single buildings to portfolios as the default setting underscores the tool’s focus on “sustainability at scale.”
The alignment of Green Star Performance v2 with the ACRS Sustainable Constructional Steel (SCS) Certification Scheme’s objectives is evident. Both initiatives prioritise high global standards for environmental, social, and ethical practices. The SCS scheme (which is recognised under the GBCA’s Responsible Product Framework as a Best Practice scheme) ensures steel products meet stringent ESG criteria, thereby complementing the GBCA’s efforts to promote sustainable building practices. Together, they advance the industry towards better environmental stewardship and social responsibility.
Green Star Performance v2 includes targets for improving the sustainability of rated buildings, with an emphasis on aligning with long-term climate goals. This aligns with the IPCC recommendations, offering a clear trajectory towards decarbonisation.
By leveraging tools like Green Star Performance v2 and the SCS Certification Scheme, the building and construction industry can make substantial strides towards a sustainable future.
